Overview — 001

Don't let fear stop you from having the healthy smile you deserve.

Dental anxiety affects thousands of people, and for some it can become so overwhelming that they avoid treatment for years. IV conscious sedation allows you to remain awake while feeling deeply relaxed throughout your appointment. Many patients remember very little of their treatment afterwards, making it an excellent option for nervous patients, those with a strong gag reflex or anyone undergoing longer procedures. One of the biggest advantages of sedation is that we can often complete significantly more treatment in a single appointment. Rather than spreading treatment over multiple visits, many patients find they're able to have several procedures completed comfortably during one sedation session, saving both time and additional appointments. Please note: we only provide IV conscious sedation for patients aged 18 years and over.

  • Helps reduce dental anxiety
  • Remain awake but deeply relaxed
  • Little memory of the appointment for many patients
  • Ideal for longer treatments
  • Multiple procedures can often be completed in one visit
  • Experienced sedation team
The process — 002

How it goes, step by step.

4 stages
  1. 01
    30–45 min

    Consultation

We'll discuss your medical history, dental concerns and assess whether IV conscious sedation is suitable for you.

  2. 02
    Included in consultation

    Treatment planning

We'll plan your treatment carefully so we can make the very best use of your sedation appointment, often completing multiple procedures during the same visit.

  3. 03
    As required

    IV sedation

A small cannula is placed into a vein in your arm or hand before sedation medication is carefully administered. You'll become deeply relaxed while remaining conscious and able to respond to instructions.

  4. 04
    30–60 min

    Recovery

After your treatment you'll rest in our recovery area before being discharged with your accompanying adult. You'll need someone to take you home and stay with you for the remainder of the day.

  • Many patients remember very little of their treatment afterwards. Everyone responds slightly differently, but it's common for the experience to feel like it passed very quickly.

  • No. You'll need a responsible adult to accompany you home, and you shouldn't drive, operate machinery, drink alcohol or sign important documents until the following day.

  • Quite a lot. Because patients are relaxed and comfortable, we're often able to complete significantly more treatment during one sedation appointment than would normally be possible across several standard visits.

  • Yes. IV conscious sedation has been used safely in dentistry for many years when carried out by appropriately trained clinicians. Throughout your appointment, you'll be continuously monitored to ensure your safety and comfort.
