Overview — 001

When a tooth can't be saved, we'll remove it as comfortably and carefully as possible.

A tooth may need to be removed because of severe decay, infection, advanced gum disease, a fractured tooth or overcrowding. Before recommending an extraction, we'll always discuss every suitable option to save the tooth where appropriate. If removal is the best solution, we'll make the procedure as comfortable as possible using modern techniques and effective local anaesthetic. The vast majority of tooth extractions we carry out are straightforward extractions, accounting for approximately 95% of cases. Occasionally, if a tooth is badly broken down, fractured beneath the gum or difficult to remove safely, a surgical extraction may be required instead. If this is the case, we'll explain everything clearly before treatment begins so there are no surprises.

  • Gentle, patient-focused care
  • Most extractions completed as straightforward procedures
  • Clear explanation before treatment
  • Modern local anaesthetic techniques
  • Sedation available for suitable adult patients
  • Comprehensive aftercare advice

Questions — 005

The things people actually ask.

  • Most patients require a routine extraction, which accounts for around 95% of the extractions we carry out. If your tooth is badly broken down, fractured below the gum or difficult to remove safely, we may recommend a surgical extraction instead.

  • No. Your tooth will be completely numbed using local anaesthetic before treatment begins. You may feel pressure during the procedure, but you shouldn't feel pain.

  • Yes. IV conscious sedation is available for suitable patients aged 18 years and over and is charged separately. Please see our Sedation Dentistry page for further information.

  • We'll provide detailed aftercare instructions before you leave. Following these carefully helps reduce the risk of complications and encourages faster healing.

  • Absolutely. Depending on the location of the tooth, replacement options may include a dental implant, bridge or denture. We'll discuss these options with you once your mouth has healed.

  • Most patients feel significantly better within a few days, although complete healing of the extraction site takes several weeks.
