Overview — 001

Treat gum disease early before it leads to permanent damage.

Gum disease is one of the most common dental conditions, yet many people don't realise they have it until it becomes more advanced. Early gum disease (gingivitis) is usually reversible with professional treatment and good oral hygiene. More advanced gum disease (periodontitis) requires specialist periodontal treatment to remove harmful bacteria from below the gum line and help stabilise the condition. Unlike a routine hygienist appointment, gum disease treatment focuses on managing infection beneath the gums and protecting the supporting bone around your teeth. Our aim is to stop the disease progressing, improve your gum health and help you keep your natural teeth for as long as possible.

  • Common signs include bleeding when brushing, swollen or tender gums, persistent bad breath, receding gums and, in more advanced cases, loose teeth. If you've noticed any of these symptoms, we recommend arranging a dental check-up as soon as possible.

  • A routine hygienist appointment focuses on preventing dental problems by removing plaque and tartar above the gum line. Gum disease treatment is more advanced and involves treating infection beneath the gums to stabilise periodontal disease.

  • Early gum disease (gingivitis) can usually be reversed with professional treatment and excellent oral hygiene. More advanced gum disease (periodontitis) cannot be cured, but it can usually be successfully managed and stabilised.

  • Most patients tolerate treatment very well. If deeper cleaning is required beneath the gums, local anaesthetic can be used to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure.

  • Not necessarily. When diagnosed early and managed correctly, many patients keep their natural teeth for many years. Early treatment is the key to achieving the best long-term outcome.

  • Regular dental check-ups, professional maintenance appointments and excellent brushing and cleaning between your teeth are the most effective ways of keeping your gums healthy.
